How to read an earnings report

Dividend investors generally like stocks with low payout ratios, value investors are often looking for stocks with lower PE ratios than their peers, and growth investors typically want to see EPS rising over time. When a large company is due to report earnings, stock analysts try to guess what its EPS and revenue will be ahead of time. The analyst guesses from all the major investment banks are averaged together to create a “consensus estimate” for the company’s EPS and revenue. Dividend payout ratio is equal to a company’s dividends per share divided by its EPS for a given quarter or year. Adjusted EPS is a type of EPS calculation in which the analyst makes adjustments to the numerator.

It is an important metric for investors because it tells them how much they need to pay per dollar of earnings. It does omit non-cash items and can be manipulated through accounting methods. Due to market conditions, a company may plan to end some business operations. But if the operations are not set to end later, the company will still generate earnings from these discontinued operations. In this case, analysts will calculate EPS only based on the procedures that are continuing with the company.

Limitations of Earnings Per Share

When looking at EPS to make an investment or trading decision, be aware of some possible drawbacks. For instance, a company can game its EPS by buying back stock, reducing the number of shares outstanding, and inflating the EPS number given the same level of earnings. Changes to accounting policy for reporting earnings can also change EPS. EPS also does not take into account the price of the share, so it has little to say about whether a company’s stock is over or undervalued.

What is Basic Earnings Per Share?

It provides the bottom-line earnings results for a company and is one of the key measures of performance for a company on a quarterly or annual basis. Since it does attract a lot of attention, management and investors place a lot of importance on it. From management’s perspective, executives can use a variety of techniques to potentially manipulate EPS in their favor. Investors are subject to this, however, so it can also be important for them to have a good understanding of what EPS represents and the ways to analyze it in order to realize the quality of earnings. As discussed, it can be important for investors to look at EPS from different angles.

Risk factors for acute dystonia are young age and male gender, history of substance abuse, and family history of dystonia [27, 28]. Acute dystonia is common with FGAs such as haloperidol [29] and less common with SGAs. It is reported that approximately 7.2% treated with long-acting parenteral risperidone develop acute dystonic reactions [30]. Also, case reports regarding acute dystonia after initiation of antipsychotic treatment with aripiprazole and ziprasidone have been published [31, 32].

Anticholinergic drugs are not recommended (actually, these drugs have been shown to exacerbate TD). The primary step is, according to guidelines, switching from the causative agent to an SGA followed by, if necessary, additional pharmacological treatment. An empirical treatment algorithm from Margolese et al. suggests tapering of anticholinergic drugs, switching to an SGA and, if necessary addition of tetrabenazine.
